Overview

This module moves beyond the AT decision-making process for the selection of AAC systems and tools for students with complex communication needs (CCNs) to address implementation of those systems and tools. Specific communication partner strategies to facilitate use of the recommended system will be discussed. The module will also review strategies for vocabulary selection, rate enhancement, color-coding and communication opportunities to support literacy and communication development.

  1. Identify three areas of the IEP in which communication goals/objectives might be included.
  2. Explain the importance of establishing roles and responsibilities for staff members supporting a student with CCNs using communication systems.
  3. List and explain two strategies that would facilitate and support students' use of their communication systems.
  4. Describe at least four considerations for vocabulary selection when developing a communication system for students with CCNs.

Gary Cumley, Ph.D, CCC-SLP

Gary Cumley, Ph.D., was a speech pathologist in California for 20 years prior to receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Cumley is retired faculty and chair of the School of Communicative Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). At UWSP, he taught graduate courses in AAC, special populations, autism and school-age language. He also established a comprehensive clinical AAC program for adults and children with CCNs. He has published and co-authored Chapter 3, entitled "Assistive Technology for Communication" in the WATI - Assessing Students' Needs for Assistive Technology. Cumley has presented at state, national and international conferences on AAC.
